“CHOICE
FRIDAY” GROUP
CHOOSES THANKFULNESS
Averaging nearly 450 students per
Friday, the Choice Friday initiative
has taken hold in the Redmond community! A buffet of enriching and
educational opportunities were plated up for students by a legion of community
partners and individuals during the first school trimester in response to the four-day school week. While looking
to share updates on the progression of Choice Friday,
as well as where Phase II student-driven developments are heading in the next trimester, a core group of Choice Friday team members are also
set on thanking all those involved with the Redmond area grass-roots initiative
in an upcoming meeting to be held Wednesday, November 18th. “Though many things still lie
ahead, we are aware how many amazing and committed people this has taken to get
up and running. From partners
and volunteers, donors and more, we are grateful for their willingness
to step up to the plate and make things happen,” shares Choice Friday committee member
Desiree Margo.
The Choice Friday team invites those who have been involved with the unique initiative and its programs, or is interested in learning more about it, to join them at their next
meeting, Wednesday, November 18th at 5pm in the Library of Elton
Gregory Middle School, 1220 SW Upas, Redmond, OR. An RSVP is requested. Contact Jamie Christman at jchristman@bendbroadband.net or
541.948.1739 to RSVP. More information can be obtained
about Choice
Friday
by visiting the website, www.choicefriday.org. All students, whether enrolled in RSD schools, local
academies, home or private schooled, are also encouraged to attend as the group
gears up to create a student survey and more student driven programs, many of
which can include earning credit(s) for classes, graduation, clubs, and
college. Community and parent
surveys are already available on the website.
From current programs such as “Global Nomads” spearheaded by international
exchange students and host family Bill & Jacki Dahl, “Literature in the Outdoors” led by
the Redmond Proficiency Academy, “Buddy
Up” matching students with disabilities, the High Desert Museum’s “Y.E.S.”
(Youth Engaged in Science) program, the Redmond Police Department’s Youth
Academy, to art, music, theater, cooking, computers, photography, sports, language,
chess and beyond, programs were brought to area students through the role of
many community partners including Redmond Area
Park & Recreation, Boys & Girls
Clubs of C.O., Deschutes
County 4-H/OSU, Bridge
Church of the Nazarene, Highland
Baptist Church, Caldera Arts, Oregon Rush Soccer, Redmond
School District & RSD “COMMUNITY
SCHOOLS”, the City of Redmond/Council,
and a host of other organizations, businesses, and individuals, including
volunteers. “Choice Friday is an opportunity to add value to students’
existing educational experiences and establish Redmond as a leader in creating
a learning community. It is one of the most important concepts that will
contribute to our community’s future prosperity,” states George
Endicott, Mayor of Redmond in a recent address to area organizations.* To find out more about Choice Friday,
